some post-Chanukah thoughts

Towards the end of Chanukah this year, I started to think about the whole story involving the oil. I was thinking that maybe there was a connection, a common thread, to other miraculous stories involving oil. The two that came to mind were in I Kings 17.14-16
and in II Kings 4.1-7.

I spoke with several different rabbi’s that I know and none had any thoughts off the top of their head. So I didn’t really pursue it much after that and was kinda just hoping that somewhere along the way I would hear something….

…sure enough, not more than a week goes by and I make my weekly journey over to Rabbi Berel Wein’s page. He also had some post-Chanukah thoughts, which I thought tied in nicely…

Estes getaway

We’ll be heading up to Venessa’s parents tonight and then off to Estes Park for some snow shoeing. We are staying at the Stanley Hotel, made famous from the movie The Shining.

I’m excited to get out into the snow and the back country since I have not been up in a while. Its funny how you can forget about how beautiful and majestic Colorado is, and then you go up and it just smacks you in the face. It a real blessing to live here.

Oh yeah, Date night

Every Tuesday night is date night. My wife and I take turns making plans for the week so we can have some time together, with no interference from the outside world. Date night can be anything from dinner at home, to a night out at the Denver Botanic Gardens while they are doing their Night Blossoms.

I highly recommend this destination during this time of year, preferably with snow on the ground for the full effect. I’ll have some pics at my flickr site soon….and maybe I’ll figure out how to post pics right here in this blog.

background- Why Tuesday night? Well, in the Torah, Genesis 1:9-13, G-d comments on His creation and says that it was “good” twice for this, the third day of creation. On all the other days of creation, He only says it once. So we attach special significance to this day. This is usually why many Jewish weddings are on a Tuesday.
